Homeschooling in Lockdown

As year passed by my little boys have started pre-school and school I’ve always had in mind the ‘what if…’ question. What if I homeschool my boys? Would that give us more time to spend together? More flexibility in our activities and even holidays? But I never dared or had the guts.

With covid-19 taking over the world this year, lockdown certainly gave me the opportunity to try homeschooling my boys. It hasn’t been easy at all! But I have enjoyed looking for resources and talking to people about it.

Here is a list of some of the topics I explored with my boys. Each link is a blog post that contains fun and educational resources such as videos, books suggestions, crafts, activities and other projects.

I hope you find these reources as useful as I did:

Learning About Our World

Amazing Birds

All about Bees

The Insect World

Spiders

Mesmerising Oceans

Transportation

I’ll be updating this post and adding more themes and fun educational resouces. Please, save this post and share with family and friends.

Christmas Crafts with Chalkola

With Christmas just around the corner I couldn’t help myself but to embark on a Christmas craft journey! At home, we love making things and most of the materials I use are recycled, or things you can find at home. Chalkola acylic paints were the perfect touch to add to my crafts and they’ve worked wonders on my projects.

I’ve put together some creative ideas where you can use your Chalkola acrylic paints this Christmas. Tell me what you think in the comments!

Fireworks!

With Christmas around the corner, there will be decorations, lights and also fireworks!

This is such an easy and colourful project. Your little ones will love it!

Just get a toilet paper tube and cut slits around one side of the toilet paper roll. Have the kids dip it in red, yellow and white paint and stamp it on a piece of paper.

Materials: Read, yellow and white paint, toilet paper tube, scissors and a piece of paper.

Cardboard Gingerbread Houses

Recycle and play!

This is such a fantastic and beautiful craft. My boys designed their own cardboard gingerbread houses and they couldn’t stop making more and more of them.

All you need to do it is to cut the house shapes with the cardboard, stick some windows, doors and a roof. Then, simple decorate them adding some lovely details like snow, window shutters, door knobs and more.

Materials: Pieces of cardboard, scissors, white paint and a brush.

Egg boxes Christmas trees!

I love using what I have at home to make my crafts so this time I use egg cardboard boxes to create mini Christmas trees.

I separated each ‘egg pocket’ and painted each of them in a slight different green tones. I sticked them one on top of the other and then I added a star as a Christmas tree topper.

You can use them as free-standing decorations or you can add a string to hang them on your Christmas tree or you can make a garland with them.

Materials: Egg cardboard box, green paint, a brush, and a string.

Mason Jar Christmas Candle

I’m sure most of you have an old glass jar lying about somewhere in the kitchen. And this is your chance to reuse it!

Give it a good clean and have a plan of what you would like to draw on it. A landscape, animal, a little town… the options are many!

I went for a small scandinavian town in the snow. I started painted some hills, then the houses and the trees. I finished it off painting the snow.

It is very simple but effective and my boys loved using it as a night light.

Materials: Glass jar, white paint, a brush and a tea candle light.

Painted Clay Ornaments

Working with air dry clay is so easy and fun!

Roll out the clay to whatever thickness you wish. Mine was about the thickness of a pound coin. Taking your cookie cutter, press into the clay and emove the excess clay. To smooth out any edges, dip your finger in water and gently massage any rough edges away.

Next, make a hole in each decoration created, and set them aside and let dry according to the instructions on the packaging.

Once dried star painting your decorations!

Material: Air dry clay, star and Christmas tree cookie cutters, green and red paint, a brush and a string.

Christmas Cards

We haven’t bought Christmas cards in ages as we love making ours!

This is a lovely and easy idea, especially if you want to create a neat design.

Form a triangle using masking tape on your white card. Next, let the kids paint inside the triangle but don’t worry if they paint on the masking tape and it will be remove from your card later.

Using a making tape will allow to have perfect straight lines to form a modern Christmas tree on your card.

Use a different variery of colours and patterns to paint, you will love the results!

Materials: White cards, masking tape, paint and a brush.

10 Creative Ways to Use Your Chalkola Markers!

How do you unleash your little artists’ creativity? Or yours?

We recently came across Chalkola and we love them! Chalkola is an art brand with products such as chalk markers in neon, pastel and metallic tones; acrylic paint markers and watercolour brush pens with vibrant eye-catching colours; magnetic chalkboards and more! Their product range is high quality and great value, and they are cleverly designed to be used by kids, businesses and artists.

My boys and I absolutely love our chalk markers and we find ourselves using them a lot. Art projects, lists, homeschooling and beyond! The chalk is easy to wipe off and the chalkboard has been a great addition to our artistic and school work sessions, but we careful as they can stain!

I’ve put together a list of 10 creative ideas about how to use your Chalkola markers. Tell me what you think in the comments!

01

Mood boards

If you are an Instagram fan, you know what I’m talking about. Mood boards have inundated the gram for a while now and they are always very eye-cathing. Have you ever created one? They are great for inspirational quotes or just to have a laugh!

02

Decorated Glass Jars

We started this project some days ago with my boys and we were very happy with the results. Autumn and Winter are on their way and our decorated jars with electric candles will definitely create a warm and cosy mood in the house.

03

Pebble Painting

This activity has never been easier! Decorating pebbles using paint can be very messy, that’s why we usually go outdoors to do it! However, Chalkola markers have made it so easy! Decorate your pebbles as you wish and when you’re ready for a different design just give them a wash and start all over again. Win win.

04

Create your Own Wrapping Paper

I absolutely love this idea! It is so simple and it looks so pretty. Just grab some brown paper, make some drawings, wrap up your presents and finish it off with a beautiful bow! What do you think?

05

Decorate your windows

I am a sucker for seasonal decorations and I enjoy adding a bit of decorative elements here and there around the house. Imagine painted dry leaves on your windows for Autumn, and Christmas trees in Winter. You can also use your mirrors, I recently wrote a nice little quote on the mirror in my boys’ bedroom.

06

Handmade Cards

Make it personal with handmade cards, they always are a nice little touch! We haven’t bought cards in ages as we love making our own for our friends and family. All you need is a piece of cardboard and your Chalkola markers. Your kids will be able to easily decorate their cards without making a mess.

07

Get organised!

I love lists. Lists and more lists. They help me get organised and to have a clear idea of my to-do jobs around the house, my craft projects and my business. Keep your Chalkola board and markers at hand and keep those lists coming!

08

Milestone Boards

Set a photoshoot at home and show off that milestone board! Perfect for birthdays or other especial ocassions. I personally love a first day and last day of school, do you?!

09

Label it!

Did you know that your Chalkola markers include labels in their boxes? From cans to containers. We label a lot in this house. Get organised and have everything in its place. I love the look of labelled glass jars in the kitchen!

10

Homeschooling Pal

The perfect tool for homeschooling! It certainly was a difficult task during lockdown, but it became way more fun when we started using our Chalkola products! Kids will love to learn how to draw, spell, or just to scribble with their Chalkola markers and boards!

Learning About Our World

Knowledge and understanding of the world relates to children’s everyday lives, their homes, the local environment and community, and the wider world. This week we focused on the following areas:

  • Layers of the Earth.
  • Continents.
Instead of using individual pieces of papers per continent, we used an 4A piece of paper to print the whole world map, that way kids have a real representation of the sizes and locations of the continents.
This second activity has all the countries per continent. An activity ideal for bigger kids.
  • Flags in the World
  • Where in the World you live
  • Contamination in the world.

At home we have a lovely Electronic Globe from Leap Frog that ‘talks’ to the kids and provides information about language, animal sounds and others according to the specific place on the globe that you’ve tapped. My boys absolutely love it!

We also have some lovely books such as the World Atlas for kids, Animals of the World for kids, and Questions and Answers About Our World which I highly recommend.

As you can see through different types of play, and experiential learning opportunities as well as practical activities, children can be provided with meaningful experiences. These will stimulate their senses as well as encourage them to ask questions, explore and wonder at their environment.

Learning About Birds

Ornithology is the study of birds and is of interest to all sorts of people from the amateur to scientists the world over.

We’ve been enjoying our time learning about birds this week. Birds are all around and they are fun to learn about. They’re fascinating and so different. If your kids are interested in birds, I’ve compiled 10 fun ways to help your kids learn about birds.

1. Observe birds. We are fortunate to have various Nature Reserves where we live. Through observation we’ve learned about size, colour, sound and even the different wing spans of birds. Birds are everywhere! so take a trip to a local lake, river, or hiking trail. Or, even better, just walk out into your own back garden.

Check out our activity! We created Owl Binoculars.

2. Listen to birds. While you’re observing, use your ears. What do birds sound like? Can you identify a bird by its call?

3. Feed the birds. Learn about the different food that birds eat and make bird seeds cakes!

Learn how to do a simple bird feeder.

4. Read books about birds. There are many books written for kids about birds. You should be able to find one at any age level. We’ve enjoyed Bird House by Libby Walden, My First Book of Birds illustrated by Zoe Ingram, RSPB Nature Guide: Birds (Rspb Giving Nature a Home) by Catherine Brereton, and Big Book of Birds by Yuval Zommer. Your local library is sure to have a collection of bird books for children too!

Here is a list of some great videos too:

5. Learn about nests and bird houses. Last Autumn we were able to study a real bird’s nest as a couple of pigeons built one in a tree in our back garden. But, if you don’t have one, you can make your own! You can use some mud and twigs. Get hands on and learn how a nest is put together.

6. Make a bird house. You can use recycled materials or small pieces of wood! Or simply get one already made from Essex Wildlife Trust. Learn about the materials used to build a bird house and the different types of bird houses. Help the birds having a home.

7. Learn about feathers. If you can, find a feather to examine. Feel how light it is. Fun your fingers along the side and feel the texture. Have some fun with the feathers and paint with them or use them to scribble and write! Do you know about the different types of feathers a single bird has?

You can also try your hand at creating feathers!

We collected some from our visit to Elm White Farm and use them to draw and write with ink!

8. Learn to identify birds. What characteristics do you need to observe in order to determine the type of bird. Find a good bird book and learn about all the different types of birds that live around you. Create your own pocket garden bird guide!

9. Get active! Learn about birds through active play. Flap your arms like a bird. Can you feel the breeze it makes? Pretend to glide through the air or land on a branch. Help your kids learn about birds and burn off some energy at the same time.

10. Do a bird craft. Do a quick search for birds on Pinterest and you’re sure to find many ideas. We made collages, owl’s eyes binocular, colourful birds from recycled tissue paper and more. Check my Birds Pinterest Board for more fun bird crafts!

Transportation Theme

This week we are learning about Means of Transportation, and here is a list of activities we’ll be doing:

How to Make Paper Aeroplanes

100 Paper Aeroplanes to Fold and Fly

Race Track Game

It is about letter recognition and letter sounds, plus you can spend a lot of time engaging in pretend play. Grab some sticky notes and a marker. Write the alphabet on the notes and place them in order on the floor leading up to a finish line.

To play this ABC game you simply have to drive your chosen vehicle along the ABC race track while saying the letter names. You can also mix up the sticky notes and practise saying the letter sounds out.

Sensory Box/Bin

For the “land” sensory bin I used black beans as the sensory bin filler. Black aquarium gravel or small pebbles would work well, too.

In the “air” sensory bin I added cotton balls as the fluffy clouds.

And for the “water” sensory bin I chose water.

I  first introduced this activity after reading some books and watching this video where we learnt some vocabulary too.

I let them explore freely and they start to use some of the vocabulary you’ve been discussing throughout your transportation theme. They are also allowed to mix the materials in the boxes.

Recycled Art for Kids

We love arts and crafts and I am used to collecting and saving every little bit of cardboard, coloured paper and other materials that are left overs from our projects. Let’s cut down on some of our waste by reusing, recycling and repurposing that trash into artwork.

This time we decided to use all these bits to create art!

We sorted through all of those plastic bottles, newspapers, and cardboard boxes and we really got our creative juices flowing!

The final result was a beautiful collage of boats and ships sailing in the sea.

Let us begin to look at trash in a new way and see the world of creative possibilities that lie before us.

Our collage contained triangles, rectangles, squares, circles, trapezoids and more! so it was a great way to recognise shapes, angles and corners.

Continue the fun and learning after creating your recycled art with these prompts.

  • Many owners name their boats, ships, or yachts. What is the name of your boat?
  • Who is the captain of your ship?
  • Where is your boat sailing? Maybe to a tropical island or a local shore point.
  • Draw a picture to illustrate the weather in your art project. Is it sunny or cloudy? Is the sea calm or rough?
  • Draw the shapes that you can see in your art project.
  • Identify the “trash” materials you can see in your art project.
  • Label the parts of your boat. Can you identify the sail, bow, stern, and hull?

I also found a lovely Nursery rhyme your little ones may enjoy.
